A 43-year-old Nigerian-British businessman died from a pulmonary embolism following a cosmetic procedure in Bangkok.
Igho Ubiribo, a 43-year-old British-Nigerian businessman and social media influencer, died on March 6 after receiving 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine at a clinic in Bangkok. An inquest at Inner West London Coroners’ Court heard that Ubiribo experienced chest pain and lost consciousness twice while having a massage with his wife after the procedure. He was transported to Sukhumvit Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the lungs.
Doctors attempted resuscitation for over 100 minutes before Ubiribo passed away. A postmortem conducted in the UK found cellular material in his lungs that matched the hyaluronic acid used in the penile filler injection, supporting the pulmonary embolism diagnosis. Coroner Jean Harkin concluded that Ubiribo died as a result of a cosmetic procedure abroad, with the cause of death officially recorded as a pulmonary embolism stemming from the injection.
Ubiribo, who had approximately 185,000 Instagram followers, was buried in London in May. His funeral was attended by prominent figures, including Nigerian singer Davido. Medical professionals, such as NHS andrology specialist Professor Vaibhav Modgil, have previously warned of the potentially devastating consequences of penile filler procedures.
