Angola hosts international art triennial
ART CUT'26 in Luanda explores empathy and dialogue through contemporary art.
The first contemporary art triennial hosted by Catholic Universities, ART CUT'26, is underway in Angola until December 20. The event, held in collaboration with the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN), brings together universities, artists, and curators globally under the theme “Exercices in Empaty.”
The triennial aims to reflect on art's power to connect people and cultures, promoting dialogue and diversity. Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça highlighted art as a space for learning empathy and interdisciplinary conversation, linking aesthetics and ethics. UCAN rector Maria da Assunção noted the event's role in exploring art's emancipatory power.
Exhibitions will take place at three Luanda locations: UCAN for the opening, Hotel Globo for a second display, and FAS Project Space featuring a video work by Sierra Leonean artist Julianknxx. The event explores the African philosophy of “ubuntu,” emphasizing mutual respect.
Why it mattersAngolan citizens and the academic community in Luanda will engage with international artists and global perspectives on empathy and art.
