Independent radio station Bonesha FM is facing financial collapse and needs 500 million Burundian francs to continue operating. Director Léon Masengo launched a 45-day fundraising campaign on October 30 to gather the necessary funds. The station, which resumed broadcasting after a six-year silence following the 2015 political crisis, is appealing to its listeners, former staff, partners, and the diaspora for support.
Masengo stated that the radio informs the public, promotes citizen debate, and broadcasts community interest programs, but economic difficulties hinder its ability to regularly broadcast and maintain services. He promised transparent communication regarding the collected sums and their allocation, acknowledging the significant amount sought and the importance of contributor trust for the campaign's success.
Bonesha FM, originally named Radio Umwizero meaning 'Hope', was established on February 19, 1996, with the aim of contributing to dialogue, reconciliation, and peace during a period of political and security crisis. It changed its name to Radio Sans Frontières Bonesha FM on January 29, 2001.
Why it mattersBonesha FM's financial struggles directly impact the public's access to independent information and community programming in Burundi.
