Burundi engineer disappears from sugar company
Three SOSUMO managers questioned by prosecutors after the agricultural equipment maintenance chief went missing on October 30.
Ismaël Mugisha, deputy head of agricultural equipment maintenance at the Moso Sugar Company (SOSUMO) in Rutana province, has been missing since October 30. Three SOSUMO managers, Arnaud Nikuze, Jean Claude Ntwari, and Aimé Clovis Irakoze, were questioned by the Makamba Court of Appeal prosecutor on November 3 regarding his disappearance. Mugisha, who had worked at SOSUMO for four years, was last seen leaving his home for work on the morning of October 30.
Colleagues reported seeing Mugisha at his office that morning, while others did not see him, leaving his exact movements unclear. Internal sources suggest disagreements over the maintenance and management of agricultural equipment, with Mugisha reportedly advocating for repairs over new purchases. Some colleagues expressed suspicions of mismanagement and potential embezzlement related to equipment procurement and upkeep, though these claims are unproven. Mugisha had also told colleagues he felt threatened by some individuals.
SOSUMO announced Mugisha's disappearance in local churches on November 1. The company has been investigating the circumstances surrounding his vanishing, with the prosecutor's office now involved in the inquiry. The investigation aims to clarify the events leading up to his disappearance and determine if any foul play was involved.
