Benin's economic council role questioned

Former head of Benin's economic council discusses its limited power against the government.

Conrad Gbaguidi, formerly head of Benin's Economic and Social Council (CES) in Cotonou, has questioned the body's effectiveness. He stated the CES is neither aligned with the ruling party nor the opposition, suggesting a neutral but potentially powerless position.

Gbaguidi shared his experience leading the CES, highlighting its limited capacity to address issues like the high cost of living. He spoke about the council's constrained room for manoeuvre when dealing with the government.

His reflections are featured in a new book titled 'La troisième voix' published by L’Harmattan, where he discusses the council's purpose and influence.
