Haiti army chief asks Benin for military training

Lieutenant-general Derby Guerrier seeks Benin's help to train Haitian officers to combat gangs.

Haiti's army chief, Lieutenant-General Derby Guerrier, has asked Benin to train Haitian soldiers to help combat the country's growing gang problem. The Haitian armed forces, remobilized in 2018, lack sufficiently trained officers to address the urgent security situation in the west of the country where gangs control territory. Guerrier is visiting Benin this week with a delegation to explore international cooperation options.

Guerrier believes Benin can provide solutions to Haiti's security challenges. His delegation is touring several military garrisons and academies in Benin to assess training capabilities. The Haitian army is focused on reconstruction and needs skilled personnel to regain control.

The visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties and secure training support for Haiti's military. Guerrier's delegation will spend the entire week in Benin. This cooperation seeks to bolster Haiti's capacity to confront armed groups.
