Botswana nominates Gevorg Tamamyan for WHO top job

President Duma Boko cited Botswana's own health challenges as a reason for supporting effective global health leadership.

President Duma Boko has formally proposed Dr. Gevorg Tamamyan for the World Health Organization's Director-General position, with the nomination letter sent to the WHO Executive Board chairperson. The World Health Assembly will consider the appointment in May 2027.

Boko explained Botswana's decision by stating that the country's health-system challenges highlight the need for effective global health leadership. He met Tamamyan and was satisfied with his commitment to underserved communities, leading Botswana to put his name forward.

Tamamyan is one of seven candidates announced by the WHO on October 29. A candidates' forum is scheduled for November 18–19 in Geneva, and the Executive Board will narrow the field to five in early 2027, with the new Director-General taking office on August 16, 2027.

Why it mattersBotswana's President is seeking a more effective World Health Organization to address global healthcare needs, particularly for those struggling to access care.
