Botswana Ranks Third in Africa on Capitalism Index

The nation scores 72.7 out of 100, placing it behind Mauritius and Seychelles on a global list.

Botswana has been recognized as Africa's third-highest-performing capitalist economy, achieving a score of 72.7 out of 100 in the Global Capitalism Index. The index, compiled by the University of Virginia’s Democracy and Capitalism Lab, positions Botswana 52nd globally. This ranking places the country behind Mauritius and Seychelles, which scored 73.9 and 73.4 respectively. Namibia followed in fourth place in Africa with a score of 69.7.

Despite its strong overall performance, the index highlights persistent barriers to private-sector growth within Botswana. Specific weaknesses were identified in the areas of business formation and capital markets. These challenges suggest that while the framework for capitalism is robust, the ease of establishing and expanding private enterprises faces significant hurdles.

The University of Virginia’s Democracy and Capitalism Lab released the findings, which provide a comparative analysis of capitalist economies worldwide. The index aims to measure various aspects of economic freedom and market functionality, with Botswana's performance indicating a solid but not unassailable position within the African continent.
