Cape Verde government invests in Praia road upgrades

The government will rehabilitate and asphalt roads in the capital, Praia, with World Bank support.

The Cape Verdean government has announced a significant investment in the rehabilitation and asphalting of key roads in Praia, the capital city. The announcement was made by the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Territorial Planning, Carlos Tavares, during a visit to the municipality. The project includes repairs between Quebra Canela and Vila Nova, as well as along Avenida dos Combatentes da Liberdade da Pátria, near Electra. Drainage work is also planned to address flooding in low-lying areas.

Minister Tavares stated that the projects are being finalized in coordination with the Praia Municipal Chamber, with works expected to commence soon. He emphasized a focus on structural improvements rather than rushed interventions to ensure lasting enhancements to traffic flow. While awaiting the larger structural works, the government will address immediate road safety issues, such as potholes.

The initiative is supported by the World Bank and involves collaboration with the Praia Municipal Chamber to ensure quality and relevance to the population's needs. Additional projects to ease traffic congestion in Vila Nova are also funded by the World Bank. Minister Tavares highlighted the importance of government and municipal coordination for urban mobility challenges in the capital.
