Cape Verde identifies night heatwaves as health threat

A new study reveals nighttime heatwaves pose the greatest health risk in Cape Verde, impacting respiratory and chronic illnesses.

Nighttime heatwaves are the biggest health threat in Cape Verde, according to a new study by the National Institute of Public Health (INSP). Contrary to public perception, the research found that elevated temperatures after dark are more prevalent and harmful than daytime sun exposure.

Epidemiologist Giseila Garcia stated that excessive heat affects the population's health broadly, leading to increased respiratory diseases and worsening existing dermatological and chronic conditions. This study, prepared in 2024 and implemented from January 2025, is the first to establish specific parameters for identifying heatwaves within the country.

Authorities are developing an early warning system using thermal sensors on Brava island and will publish official heatwave data in the Boletim Oficial. The study, a partnership between INSP and the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG), analyzed six municipalities and was funded by Luxembourgish Cooperation.

Why it mattersCape Verdeans face increased risks of respiratory and chronic illnesses due to nighttime heatwaves.
