Praia mayor seeks special status for capital city

Fernando Pinto argues for differentiated treatment of Praia due to the costs of its capital status.

Fernando Pinto, mayor of Praia, is calling for the capital city to receive "differentiated treatment" to acknowledge its status. He stated that Praia should be seen and treated as the capital, not just as a municipality, and be an active part of national solutions. Pinto advocates for balanced investment across all of Cape Verde's municipalities to prevent excessive migration to Praia.

Pinto explained that investing in other municipalities would reduce the "avalanche of rural exodus" to Praia. He also noted that Praia currently hosts the Presidency, the Government, major companies, universities, and all embassies. He believes that investing in inter-island connectivity, such as enabling travel between Praia and Maio for work, is a priority for balanced national development.

The mayor emphasized the need to reinforce collaboration with the National Institute for Territorial Management. This initiative is part of the World Cities Day celebrations, aiming to foster dialogue on urban development challenges in Cape Verde. Pinto stressed that improved connectivity would resolve many urban issues and lead to more equitable development.
