Algeria Launches National AI Doctorate Competition

A new national doctorate program will integrate three computer science schools to advance artificial intelligence research.

Algeria's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is set to launch a national doctorate competition focused on artificial intelligence. This initiative will consolidate three national computer science schools in Algiers, Bejaia, and Sidi Bel Abbes into a single doctoral program. The move is part of the nation's strategy to bolster AI development within the higher education sector.

The program aims to structure a national doctoral school covering all AI-related fields, with specific thematic doctorates planned for priority economic sectors such as health, energy, water, transport, agriculture, and public administration. An announcement for 102 positions in the integrated computer science doctoral school is expected soon. Discussions also covered a draft executive decree for a specific AI research program, with calls for project participation scheduled for early November.

The strategy seeks to involve economic actors, both public and private, in AI development by exploring cooperation avenues and providing financial and logistical support. This includes enhancing high-performance computing infrastructure and backing scientific research and innovation in AI. The overarching goal is to strengthen Algeria's technological sovereignty through open-source government AI models, superior computing capabilities, and enhanced national talent development.

Why it mattersAlgerian students pursuing advanced studies in computer science will have new opportunities to specialize in artificial intelligence.
