Algeria shares water desalination experience in Malta
Algerian Water Desalination Company presented its strategy for 2025-2030, focusing on brine valorization.
Algeria is enhancing its water desalination industry by seeking ways to utilize waste products and convert them into valuable resources. This initiative was the focus of Algeria's participation in a regional meeting held in Malta on November 3 and 4. The Algerian Water Desalination Company, a subsidiary of Sonatrach, showcased Algeria's experience in developing desalination facilities and improving their technical, energy, and environmental performance.
The meeting provided a platform to discuss national water security efforts and address water scarcity exacerbated by climate change. The company outlined its strategic vision for 2025-2030, particularly concerning the valorization of brine, a byproduct of desalination. This involves studying the potential for extracting economic, industrial, and environmental value from brine using scientific research and innovative technologies.
To achieve this, the company is pursuing scientific and technical cooperation with national institutions, including the National Observatory for Environment and Sustainable Development and universities. This collaboration aims to develop studies on brine characteristics and explore valorization methods. The company affirmed its commitment to sustainable desalination that balances water security, industrial efficiency, technological innovation, and environmental protection, aligning with national directives and Algeria's sustainable development commitments.
Why it mattersAlgerians face challenges with water scarcity due to climate change, and the country is developing strategies to improve water security through desalination technology.
