Sondos Sonbol wins historic wushu gold for Egypt

The Egyptian athlete secured the nation's first Youth Olympic medal in wushu with a combined score of 18.660 points.

Egyptian wushu athlete Sondos Sonbol won gold in the women’s Changquan combined event at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on Tuesday, 3 November. This victory marks Egypt's first Youth Olympic medal in the martial art, which debuted as an official sport in Dakar.

Sonbol achieved a combined score of 18.660 points, surpassing Venezuela's Valeria Frannerys Dudamel Alvarado (18.199) and India's Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu (18.039). She led both wushu disciplines, scoring 9.330 points in the staff-based Gunshu and maintaining her lead in Changquan.

Wushu combines traditional combat with choreographed athletic movements, including kicks, jumps, and routines, with some disciplines using weapons. Sonbol's win is a significant achievement for the sport's debut at the Youth Olympic Games.
