UN mission begins withdrawal from Western Sahara

All 13 sites of the UN's Western Sahara mission will close as its chief meets Moroccan officials.

The United Nations mission for organising a referendum in Western Sahara, Minurso, is preparing to close all 13 of its sites within the territory. This follows a Russian veto on a US amendment at the UN Security Council four days ago. A small team will oversee the liquidation process.

The head of Minurso is currently in Morocco to discuss the mission's departure with relevant parties. The plan for the UN mission's withdrawal has been detailed following the Security Council meeting.

The mission's closure comes after a period of discussion regarding its liquidation. The specific timeline for the complete departure of the mission from its 13 locations has not yet been stated.
