Eramet reinforces cervical cancer screening in Haut-Ogooué
The mining group donated diagnostic and treatment equipment to two hospitals as part of the "Octobre Rose" campaign.
The Eramet Group has donated equipment for diagnosing and treating cervical lesions to the Amissa University Hospital Center in Franceville and the Marcel Abéké Hospital (HMA) in Moanda. The handover, which took place on October 19, is part of the "Octobre Rose" campaign aimed at strengthening local health facilities' capacity for prevention, early detection, and management of human papillomavirus (HPV), a primary risk factor for cervical cancer.
This initiative follows a pilot study conducted from March to June 2025 in Haut-Ogooué, under the patronage of the Ministry of Health, which screened over 200 women aged 35 to 65. The study revealed a 19% overall HPV prevalence, indicating that nearly one in five women tested positive, though not all had cancerous lesions. Awareness campaigns in Moanda, Mounana, Bakoumba, and Sucaf also engaged hundreds to encourage screening.
Eramet acquired a digital colposcope and a thermocoagulator in 2026 to enhance diagnosis and treatment. These donations to Franceville and Moanda follow an earlier provision to Libreville's CHU in summer 2026. The company also plans to fund rapid test kits and midwife training, aligning with its "Act for Positive Mining" CSR roadmap to ensure lasting local capacity building.
Why it mattersWomen in the Haut-Ogooué region are affected by a higher than expected prevalence of HPV, increasing their risk of cervical cancer.
