Gambia university students protest campus conditions

Students at the University of The Gambia demanded urgent action on food, water, and transport despite government assurances.

Students at the University of The Gambia (UTG) protested on Monday at the Kanifing Campus over deteriorating conditions at the Faraba Campus. Demonstrators highlighted shortages of food, water, sanitation, and internet, alongside inadequate transportation, which they say disrupts academic life.

Protesters carried placards demanding better cafeteria services and clean facilities, stating that previous government assurances had not led to tangible improvements. Students' Union President Ismaila Fadera presented a petition to Higher Education Minister Professor Pierre Gomez, who visited the campus.

The government committed to restoring catering, improving water and internet access, and deploying 20 buses. However, students insisted that concrete action, not just pledges, was needed to address the critical situation affecting their ability to attend lectures and examinations.
