Guinea-Bissau ministry clarifies energy tariffs
The Natural Resources Ministry stated the Gambia River Basin Development Organization is not responsible for electricity prices.
Guinea-Bissau's Ministry of Natural Resources responded on Thursday, November 5, 2026, to criticisms from the Consumers Association of Goods and Services (ACOBES) regarding electricity prices. The ministry clarified that the Organization for the Development of the Gambia River Basin (OMVG) does not set the tariffs applied in Guinea-Bissau.
ACOBES Secretary-General Bambo Sanhá had called the current electricity costs "worrying" and argued there was no justification for maintaining them. The ministry explained in a statement that the OMVG's primary role is regional electrical interconnection, not the production, sale, or pricing of energy consumed domestically.
The electricity supplied to Guinea-Bissau comes from the Kaleta hydroelectric dam in Guinea-Conakry and is sold by Electricidade da Guiné (EDG) to EAGB. The ministry stressed that the price EAGB pays the supplier differs from the final consumer tariff, which is determined by national factors. The government urged ACOBES to consult relevant authorities before making public statements on the energy sector.
Why it mattersConsumers in Guinea-Bissau are affected by high electricity prices, and the government has clarified the responsibilities for setting these tariffs.
