PSTGB leader criticises ECOWAS, demands elections

Sene Bacai Cassamá says ECOWAS consultations excluded parties and calls for simultaneous polls within six months.

Sene Bacai Cassamá, president of the Socialist Workers' Party of Guinea-Bissau (PSTGB), called for simultaneous elections within six months to choose a new President and Government. Cassamá made these statements on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in Bissau.

The PSTGB leader criticised the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) mission, stating that excluding political parties from consultations violates democratic principles. Cassamá expressed concern that the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) should pressure for a return to constitutional normality, adding that the country is not on the right path.

Cassamá argued that extending the absence of elections by another year would be unjust given the population's growing difficulties. He denounced alleged restrictions on democratic freedoms and political activity, stating that parties lack freedom to speak and citizens cannot freely express divergent opinions.

Why it mattersThe leader of the PSTGB is calling for immediate elections and criticising regional bodies, affecting the political direction of Guinea-Bissau.
