ADM and Concern Worldwide US expand Kenya LEAF programme
The initiative now supports 17,500 farmers in Tana River County with climate-smart practices and improved market access.
ADM and Concern Worldwide US have expanded their LEAF programme in Kenya's Tana River County, now reaching 17,500 farmers. The programme, in its fourth phase since 2019, provides technical training, better access to inputs, and stronger market connections to help farmers adopt climate-smart practices. Farmers in the programme have produced over 2,000 metric tons of crops and show greater resilience to environmental challenges.
Malnutrition rates in LEAF-supported communities have fallen to 7.3%, significantly lower than the Tana River County average of 11.5%. Since January, the programme has supplied irrigation equipment to over 450 farmers, covering about 330 acres, and established or strengthened 18 fruit tree nurseries. Community health promoters have also screened over 5,100 children for malnutrition and provided nutrition education.
The programme's success is measured by malnutrition rates and crop tonnage, not commercial export volumes. While the Galole processing plant has a mango pulp capacity of 2,880 metric tons, fresh exports require different certifications. Cecelia Achieng, a farmer from Manyatta Village, stated that the programme has helped her village access income and knowledge from production to market.
Why it mattersFarmers in Tana River County are gaining access to climate-smart practices, irrigation equipment, and training to improve crop production and resilience.
