Kenya confirms ninth Ebola case as United States raises travel advisory

Health officials report the newest patient is a close relative of the first victim, while contact tracing reaches 134 of 135 identified individuals.

Kenya confirmed a ninth case of Ebola on October 19 after a 24-year-old man tested positive while in quarantine. Director General for Health Dr Patrick Amoth stated that the patient is a close relative of the first victim and has started treatment. Eight hospitalized patients are responding well and showing significant improvement under observation.

The Ministry of Health distributed medical supplies to twenty-eight high-risk counties and established a dedicated testing laboratory at Kenyatta National Hospital. Contact tracing has covered 134 of 135 identified people, placing them in quarantine without any transmission recorded inside the facilities.

The United States State Department raised its travel advisory for Kenya to Level three in response to the outbreak. Officials noted that Kenya has not imposed any restrictions on public gatherings, travel or trade, and contacts who remain well will begin returning home from October 25 after completing their twenty-one-day monitoring period.

Why it mattersHealth officials and citizens in Kenya are directly affected by the Ebola outbreak, quarantine measures, and newly implemented medical testing protocols.
