President William Ruto announced a massive expansion of the national internship initiative during recent celebrations in Eldoret.
President William Ruto announced plans to scale up the National Internship Programme by adding 50,000 places starting in January 2027. Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret, the President stated that the expanded initiative will provide monthly stipends to successful applicants finishing their studies at universities, technical and vocational education and training institutions, and other colleges.
Placements under the upcoming expansion will use a transparent, digital, and merit-based system, supported by incentives for private employers to offer meaningful work experience. The plan addresses the challenge faced by graduates who struggle to find jobs without prior experience.
This internship expansion is part of four measures proposed by the government, which also include changes to income tax, stamp duty on land transactions, and import duty on mobile phones. Administrative and financing arrangements are expected to proceed ahead of the rollout.
Why it mattersYoung people finishing their studies at universities and colleges are affected by gaining access to the expanded internship programme and monthly stipends.
