The Health Sector Movement Union has voiced strong objections to the Tripoli government's decision to recruit approximately 200 Syrian medical and paramedical personnel. The union revealed that the recruitment company will bring in 125 nursing staff and 75 medical professionals. These foreign workers are slated to receive monthly salaries in US dollars ranging from $2,000 for a third-level physician to $3,200 for a consultant, with other specialists earning between $2,500 and $3,000.
Union members, who have been staging a continuous demonstration outside the Prime Minister’s Office, are demanding a pay raise for local healthcare workers. Their proposal includes a salary scale starting at 2,367 dinars for the first grade and reaching 15,720 dinars for the 15th grade, along with the activation of bonuses to match the cost of living. The union warns that hiring foreign doctors at high salaries could lead to the marginalization of national cadres and a decline in health services.
The union fears that the recruitment of foreign staff at salaries up to $3,200, while local cadres are seeking raises and bonuses to keep pace with living costs, could exacerbate existing issues within the health sector. They are concerned this policy may cause further deterioration of health services and potentially lead to the migration of skilled Libyan medical talent.
