The third unit at Zawia Combined-Cycle Power Plant is now online, adding 150 MW to Libya's national grid following delayed repairs.
Libya's national electricity grid has received a boost with the return of the Third Unit at the Zawia Combined-Cycle Power Plant, contributing 150 MW of power. The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) confirmed the unit's connection after GE Vernova completed a major overhaul. This marks the end of a prolonged maintenance period that was originally scheduled for completion on July 6, 2026.
The maintenance process faced significant delays, including an incident in August where an armed drone targeted the power station, forcing GE Vernova to suspend work. Further disruptions occurred in May when clashes involving the 7 May Zawia militia led to a nine-day shutdown of operations. GE Vernova also cited technical difficulties as a reason for the delayed commissioning.
To expedite the process, GE Vernova deployed additional engineering expertise and technical resources, both on-site and remotely. This comes amid a very hot summer in Libya, which has seen prolonged power cuts and blackouts affecting residents since late June.
