Mali signs two geological accords with Russia

The agreements aim to create a digital geological map and a national information system.

Mali signed two geological cooperation agreements with Russia on October 29, 2026, on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow. The accords were signed between Mali's Ministry of Mines and Zarubezhgeologia, a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned Rosgeologia group.

The first agreement focuses on creating a digital geological map covering over half of Mali's territory. The second establishes a national information system to centralize geological data, aid analysis, and manage mining licenses and activities. These agreements also include training for Malian specialists in interpreting satellite imagery.

The accords aim to improve the understanding and management of Mali's resources. They do not constitute the granting of new exploitation permits or the announcement of commercially viable discoveries. The summit itself covered a broad economic agenda, including cereals, nuclear energy, education, and trade routes.

Why it mattersMali's mining sector will benefit from improved geological data and information systems, aiding resource management.
