Minister Pursues Meat Price Drop Through Sector Talks

Mali's Minister of Industry and Commerce is holding discussions to lower meat prices by addressing supply and distribution costs.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Moussa Alassane Diallo is intensifying consultations with stakeholders in the livestock and meat sector to achieve a sustainable reduction in meat prices. The minister presided over a third meeting on October 19, 2026, focusing on concrete measures to improve animal availability, ease distribution constraints, and ultimately lower costs for consumers. The rising price of meat is a significant concern for Malian households, impacting daily food budgets.

Previous meetings have examined both internal and external factors affecting the sector, including transport, marketing conditions, supply challenges, and livestock movement costs. Diallo's ministry aims for a comprehensive solution, recognizing that addressing only retail prices will not suffice if upstream difficulties persist. The goal is to foster better coordination among producers, livestock traders, transporters, butchers, and public authorities.

The ongoing dialogue seeks to identify key leverage points for gradual improvements within the sector. By involving all parties, the ministry aims to find practical answers tailored to on-the-ground realities. The current transitional regime for travelers, transporters, and traders remains in effect as these working groups prepare their recommendations for a potential framework agreement.

Why it mattersMalian consumers are affected by the high cost of meat, a staple food, and the minister is working to make it more affordable.
