Mauritania and World Bank Discuss Reform Project

Government officials and World Bank representatives met to review proposed reforms for the Prevention and Resilience project.

Mauritania's Ministry of Economic Affairs and Development initiated meetings this week to discuss reform proposals with the World Bank. These discussions are crucial for meeting the conditions required to access funding for the "Prevention and Resilience" (PRA) project. The goal is to strengthen the partnership between the Mauritanian government and the World Bank by examining priority reforms with technical and financial partners to create an integrated and achievable reform matrix.

Yacoub Ould Ahmed Aïcha, Secretary-General of the Ministry, stated that securing resources for this mechanism depends on achieving expected results. He urged ministerial sectors and relevant institutions to take responsibility, monitor reform implementation, and adhere to agreed-upon deadlines. Aïcha highlighted that the national strategy for peace and social cohesion (2025-2030) emphasizes decentralization, territorial integration, economic empowerment for youth and women, natural resource governance, and extremism prevention.

Ibou Diouf, the World Bank's Resident Representative in Mauritania, stressed the importance of enhanced cooperation. He noted the meeting as an opportunity to discuss the proposed reforms for the "Prevention and Resilience" project, underscoring the significance of collaboration in peace and security given regional challenges.
