A civic advocate is calling for a coordinated system to identify and act on domestic violence risk signals following a child's death.
Seven-month-old Adrianno was fatally stabbed by his father in Roche Bois, an event that has prompted calls for a new approach to domestic violence prevention in Mauritius. Civic advocate Dharamraj Deenoo, Secretary General of Fam An Mars, described the tragedy as a failure of protection and a wound on society's conscience.
Deenoo proposed the creation of a High Risk Assessment Framework during a radio appearance. This system would facilitate information sharing among police, social workers, health professionals, and NGOs to identify and address imminent dangers. He argued that such a framework could have detected patterns of abuse or psychological instability before the fatal incident.
The advocate highlighted that domestic violence can escalate rapidly, leaving victims, particularly children, unprotected without a coordinated response. He stressed that the Domestic Abuse Act, while existing, lacks accessibility and that a High Risk Framework is an urgent necessity to prevent future tragedies.
