Nineteen accidents, including two fatal ones, have occurred at ten bus stations and traffic centers across Mauritius since January 2024, according to Transport Minister Osman Mahomed. The minister provided the figures to Parliament on Tuesday, stating that 11 accidents resulted in minor injuries and six in serious injuries. Flacq station reported five accidents, one fatal, while Immigration station had four, three with serious injuries. Curepipe and Rose-Hill each recorded two accidents.
These official figures may not capture the full extent of risks, as accidents occurring near stations but outside their official boundaries are not included in the statistics. Several incidents have been reported near the Gare du Nord and Résidence La Cure. The question arises whether only incidents within administrative limits accurately reflect the danger posed by these transport hubs.
The minister noted that while stations are equipped with safety features like pedestrian crossings and lighting, their maintenance and the safety of immediate surroundings fall to local authorities. This highlights an ongoing challenge in ensuring comprehensive safety, especially as Mauritius saw a 10.9% increase in road accidents in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year.
