Chinese steel firm eyes Malawi market

Hongwang New Materials plans to establish manufacturing operations and transfer technology to Malawi.

Chinese steel manufacturer Hongwang New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. is expanding its investment plans into Malawi to establish manufacturing operations. The company is developing factories in Malawi, alongside agreements in Tanzania and Madagascar.

Hongwang New Materials Deputy General Manager Deng Weiquan said the company is working with China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on a ‘Two Countries, Two Parks’ initiative. This program links an industrial park in Loudi, Hunan, with one in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to process products for local use or export.

Economist Maury Siyasiya expressed optimism that the proposed investment could reduce Malawi’s reliance on imported steel and create opportunities for local businesses. The Hunan factory, established in September 2021, began operations in March 2023 and records annual sales of 3.5 billion yuan.

Why it mattersMalawians may benefit from reduced reliance on imported steel and new business opportunities if the investment translates into actual production.
