Malawi opposition attacks government over corruption and fuel chaos

The Malawi Congress Party claims leadership vacuum and economic turmoil are deepening the nation's crisis.

Malawi’s main opposition party, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has accused the government of failing to provide leadership amidst widespread corruption, fuel shortages, and blackouts. MCP campaign director Moses Kunkuyu stated in Lilongwe that President Peter Mutharika's private trip to South Africa has increased public anxiety while essential medicines are also scarce in hospitals.

Kunkuyu claimed public confidence is eroding due to controversial appointments and the handling of legal cases, warning of damage to Malawi’s international reputation. He highlighted that prolonged fuel shortages have disrupted businesses and public services, while foreign currency scarcity hinders the import of critical supplies.

The MCP urged First Vice-President Jane Ansah to address the nation on these critical issues, including the fuel crisis. Chief Secretary Justin Saidi dismissed the MCP's concerns as political rhetoric, stating the party lacks the mandate to speak for all Malawians. President Mutharika departed for South Africa on October 6, 2026, for his fifth private visit.
