Mozambique bridge collapses again after repairs

A temporary Revuè River bridge in Manica province failed six days after reopening, disrupting traffic.

President Daniel Chapo announced plans for over $7.5bn in investments for Mozambique's Maputo, Beira, and Nacala transport corridors on Wednesday. The same day, a temporary metal bridge over the Revuè River in Manica province collapsed again. The bridge, on the road between Chimoio and Sussundenga, failed after a truck carrying sand or stones crossed it, disrupting traffic for the second time in a week.

The bridge had reopened only six days prior to the collapse. It is unclear if the truck exceeded the bridge's 30-tonne weight limit. This incident highlights ongoing issues with Mozambique's infrastructure management, where temporary emergency bridges are often used long past their intended lifespan.

The N1, the country's main north-south highway, also suffers from poor conditions on many sections. A $400m World Bank rehabilitation program for the N1 has been discussed for years, but significant improvements are still needed.
