Kavango East Youth Learn Climate-Smart Farming Skills

A new center in Ndiyona Constituency aims to equip young people with practical agricultural knowledge for sustainable production and entrepreneurship.

Young people in Namibia's Kavango East region will gain hands-on agricultural experience at the newly opened Linus Shashipapo Climate Change Action Centre. The facility, located in Ndiyona Constituency, is designed to bridge climate action with employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for youth. Education ministry officials stated the center could become a regional hub for practical learning, moving beyond traditional classroom instruction.

The center will expose participants to horticulture, sustainable production methods, and climate-smart technologies, enabling them to learn by doing. This initiative aims to help young individuals acquire skills for establishing their own productive ventures while learning to maintain food production amidst changing climate conditions. Officials emphasized that the center's success relies on continued cooperation among involved institutions and stakeholders.

The project is intended to demonstrate how sustainable agriculture can create community opportunities and address environmental challenges. The education ministry plans to document the center's outcomes to assess if the model can be replicated in other Namibian areas, particularly those with limited access to land, training, technology, and markets for young people.

Why it mattersYoung people in Kavango East are affected by gaining practical skills for climate-smart agriculture and potential entrepreneurship.
