Namibian athletes secured a bronze in football and multiple medals in athletics at the Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Association Games in Bulawayo.
Namibia's participation in the recent Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Association (Cosassa) Games in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, was deemed a success, with the country's football and athletics teams achieving strong results. Despite some administrative and technical issues, the Namibian contingent brought home a bronze medal in football and numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals in athletics events. General team manager Nomin Lucas praised the organizers for hosting the games, noting that while generally well-organized, there were areas for improvement.
Lucas identified communication and coordination as key areas needing enhancement, emphasizing the need for clearer understanding and consistent application of competition procedures among organizers and officials. A notable incident involved young athlete Hafeni Fillemon, who was initially barred from the U/14 boys' 100m final due to a lost bib number. An appeal by the Namibian team was successful, allowing Fillemon to compete and ultimately win the gold medal with the fastest time.
The successful appeal for Fillemon highlighted the importance of fair and careful handling of administrative and technical matters, especially concerning young athletes. Lucas stated that these challenges, while providing learning opportunities, did not detract from Namibia's overall positive performance. The athletes were commended for representing the country with pride, determination, and good sportsmanship throughout the competition held from August 31 to September 3.
