Niger onion day focuses on youth and e-commerce
The 6th National Onion Day in Niamey aims to integrate young people into agri-food processing and boost online sales.
Niger held its 6th National Onion Day in Niamey from October 25-27, 2026, focusing on involving youth in agri-food processing and developing e-commerce to enhance national production value. The event's theme highlighted youth integration in processing and electronic trade to better valorize the onion sector.
Ali Samba Diabiri, Secretary General of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, stated that selling raw onions limits profits due to conservation issues, post-harvest losses, and market access constraints. He emphasized that true value comes from better conservation, processing, packaging, and distribution, calling agri-food transformation a key to economic sovereignty.
Diabiri stressed the need for training and job creation for youth in agriculture and agri-food sectors, noting e-commerce potential to connect producers and consumers and expand markets. The ministry is developing a national e-commerce strategy, with a validation workshop planned in Bangoula.
Why it mattersNiger's onion producers and processors are directly affected by initiatives to improve conservation, processing, and market access through e-commerce.
