NASHGODAN urges feed banks for livestock farmers
The National Sheep and Goat Development Association of Nigeria calls for government support to combat rising feed costs.
The National Sheep and Goat Development Association of Nigeria (NASHGODAN) has asked the Federal Government to create community-based feed banks across the country. This aims to ensure livestock farmers can access affordable and quality animal feed, addressing concerns over rising costs and the sustainability of sheep and goat farming.
NASHGODAN National President Abdullateef Ahmed stated in Abuja that all government levels should partner with financial institutions, development partners, feed manufacturers, and research bodies. He believes this collaboration, combining government support with private sector investment, can lead to affordable livestock feed and allow farmers to sustain their businesses.
Ahmed warned that high feed prices threaten sheep and goat farming's sustainability, potentially discouraging young people from entering the sector and reducing market-ready animal supply. He noted that smallholder farmers, who produce a significant share of Nigeria’s sheep and goats, are particularly vulnerable to reduced animal growth, disease, and lower profits when feed becomes too expensive.
