Sierra Leone launches national shipping company with China

The new company, Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company, plans to build a fleet of 50 vessels.

President Julius Maada Bio launched the Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company on Monday, October 19, 2026, in Freetown. This joint venture between the Sierra Leone National Shipping Agency and China’s Zhejiang Xiehai Group aims to increase the nation's stake in transporting its own goods. The state agency holds a 30% share, while the Chinese partner owns 70%.

The company plans to build a fleet of 50 vessels, with 30 ships in the first phase of development. President Bio stated that this move reduces reliance on foreign carriers for exports and imports. The initiative is expected to strengthen maritime connectivity and facilitate the transport of minerals, agricultural commodities, and other commercial goods.

This venture seeks to position Sierra Leone as a maritime and logistics hub along the West African coast. It is designed to enhance the country's participation in international shipping and ensure greater economic benefits from its trade activities. The government has called for transparency and accountability in the company's operations.

Why it mattersSierra Leoneans will benefit from employment opportunities and greater economic returns from the nation's trade.
