Sierra Leone secures $60.97 million for immunisation

Gavi funding will expand malaria and hepatitis B vaccines through 2030.

Sierra Leone has secured US$60.97 million from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to boost childhood vaccinations until 2030. This funding under Gavi's 6.0 programme will support routine immunisation, including malaria vaccination and the hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine.

The Ministry of Health, led by Minister Dr Austin Demby, will use the funds to expand malaria vaccination to Western Area Urban, aiming to protect an additional 40,000 children annually. The hepatitis B vaccine will be given to infants within 24 hours of birth to prevent chronic infection.

The government has committed to meeting its co-financing obligations to sustain the programme. Sierra Leone has maintained routine vaccination coverage above 90% for the past five years.
