A Touba bakery manager received a two-year sentence, with six months suspended, for defrauding his employer of funds intended for expansion.
A bakery manager in Touba, S. Diop, has been sentenced to two years in prison, with six months to be served, for abusing the trust of his employer, Mouhamadou Thiam. The court also ordered Diop to pay 15 million FCfa in damages. The case stems from 2022 when Thiam, an entrepreneur, entrusted Diop with managing his bakery before leaving Senegal. Diop was supposed to remit 82% of profits to a bank account monthly, keeping 18% for himself.
Thiam also provided Diop with five million FCfa to purchase two new bakeries. Upon his return, Thiam discovered the bakeries were not bought and the five million FCfa could not be accounted for. Further discrepancies included unexplained large flour orders and a tampered electricity meter, resulting in a significant fine. Thiam initially reported a loss of over five million FCfa and filed a complaint for abuse of trust.
During the investigation, Diop reportedly confessed and agreed to repay the money, but at trial, he recanted much of his statement, admitting only a debt of 2.6 million FCfa. The prosecution sought a two-year prison sentence, citing bad faith. The tribunal found Diop guilty, imposing the prison sentence and ordering him to pay 15 million FCfa in damages to his former employer.
