President Bassirou Diomaye Faye participated in an embellishment and greening event around the Léopold Sédar Senghor stadium on Saturday, September 5. Over two hundred young people from the "Xeyu Ndaw Yi" employment program were mobilized for the campaign. The President used the occasion to urge local governments to make improving the living environment a top priority, stating that sanitation and the quality of life are natural areas of focus for mayors and contribute to the well-being of their constituents.
This initiative is part of the Ministry of Youth and Sports' National Civic Engagement Program. The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, scheduled from October 31 to November 13, 2026, will be the first Olympic sporting event held in Africa, positioning Dakar as a hub for international sports and cultural exchange. The President also announced that the Fondation Sénégal Solidaire will contribute five hundred million FCFA towards ticket purchases for the event.
Separately, a trial is underway concerning Cheikh Ibrahima Niass, detained since January 2024, facing charges of counterfeiting, smuggling, criminal conspiracy, and illegal possession of a weapon. Customs officials reportedly found a suitcase with nine hundred seventy-seven million, five hundred ninety-seven thousand, four hundred thirteen FCFA in counterfeit bills at his home. The prosecution has requested five years imprisonment.
