Nine killed in Bor County communal fighting
Renewed clashes between Abang and Malual communities over land dispute result in nine deaths and a curfew.
At least nine people died in renewed fighting between the Abang and Malual communities in Bor County, Jonglei State, on Monday. Bor County Commissioner Daniel Deng Panchol stated that seven of the deceased were from the two warring communities, with five from Malual and two from Abang. Two additional individuals from neighbouring communities, one woman from Gwala and one man from Deer, also lost their lives, bringing the total to nine.
Commissioner Deng announced that state and county authorities have imposed a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to curb the violence. Joint security forces, including CID and National Security Service personnel, have been deployed to de-escalate tensions and protect civilians. The government also plans to engage youth and elders from both communities to foster restraint and peaceful coexistence.
The recent clashes are rooted in a long-standing territorial dispute between the Abang and Malual communities concerning the Malual-Chaat area. Tensions have been high since late April, following the establishment of a new administrative boma, which exacerbated disagreements over local boundaries and administrative authority.
