The UN Economic Commission for Africa has initiated RESIslands to bolster climate risk assessment and investment readiness.
The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has launched the RESIslands initiative in Sao Tome and Principe, aiming to enhance the nation's preparedness for climate change impacts. This project is part of a larger program involving eight other African countries. The initiative focuses on strengthening climate risk evaluation, institutional capacity, and readiness for climate-related investments, with a specific emphasis on safeguarding communities and essential services.
Funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented by UNECA, the 30-month RESIslands project supports nine member states of the African Island States Climate Commission (AISCC). Sao Tome and Principe will receive support to improve national capacities for risk assessment, enhance climate information, and prepare investment proposals aligned with national priorities. The goal is to translate national priorities into tangible actions and lasting benefits for the population.
UNECA program manager Kjartan Fjeldsted highlighted the country's natural resources, including its marine environment, forests, and biodiversity, underscoring the importance of protecting the foundations of agriculture, fisheries, and sustainable tourism. He also acknowledged Sao Tome and Principe's active contribution to regional cooperation through the AISCC.
