Togo and China signed thirteen accords in Beijing to boost cooperation in finance, agriculture, and trade.
Togo and China have signed thirteen agreements and memorandums of understanding aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. The signing ceremony in Beijing was presided over by Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé and Chinese Premier Li Qiang. These new instruments cover multiple sectors including finance, economy, security, trade, agriculture, training, media, and decentralized cooperation, following the elevation of Sino-Togolese relations to a "Community of Shared Future for China and Togo in the New Era."
A significant outcome of the financial cooperation is the partial cancellation of Togo's public debt, which will alleviate the country's financial obligations. In terms of economic and commercial exchanges, the agreements include a protocol on the Authorized Economic Operators (AEO) program between the Togolese Revenue Office (OTR) and China's General Administration of Customs. This aims to streamline trade, enhance trust between customs administrations, and facilitate import and export operations.
Agricultural cooperation will see enhanced access for Togolese soybeans to the Chinese market through a protocol on phytosanitary requirements. This agreement is expected to boost agricultural trade and promote Togolese produce on international markets. Both nations also committed to strengthening collaboration in industrial sectors, supply chains, digital trade, international economic and trade cooperation, and green development, fostering modernization and sustainable practices.
Why it mattersTogo's financial obligations are reduced and its agricultural exports to China are facilitated.
