Togo pharmacists warn of TikTok abortion drug sales
Online accounts openly promote and sell abortion-related products, bypassing strict medical regulations.
Pharmacists in Togo are raising alarms about TikTok accounts openly promoting and selling abortion-related products. These sales bypass the strict medical regulations and oversight required for such sensitive medications.
A local pharmacist expressed shock after witnessing a live TikTok broadcast advertising abortion products, with the seller explaining their usage. When questioned about legal authorization, the seller blocked the pharmacist. The purchase of these specific medications is tightly controlled even within pharmacies.
This issue extends beyond Togo, as a similar TikTok account in neighboring Benin, named "Avortement 2290," led to police intervention and account closure in 2025. Operators were arrested for offering abortifacient drugs without medical qualifications or legal permission.
Why it mattersPeople in Togo seeking abortion-related medications are at risk of obtaining unregulated and potentially dangerous products through social media platforms.
