Tunisia expands remote medical consultations

Sfax digital hospital connects Gafsa and Skhira facilities for neurology, cardiology, and nephrology care.

Tunisia's Sfax Digital Hospital is increasing access to specialized healthcare by expanding remote medical consultations in neurology, cardiology, and nephrology. This initiative aims to bring health services closer to citizens, reduce travel to major hospitals, and improve patient follow-up. The Ministry of Health announced on Thursday, November 5, 2026, that several hospitals now offer these remote consultations coordinated with Sfax university hospital teams.

In Gafsa governorate, the Houcine Bouzaïane Regional Hospital has implemented remote neurology consultations in partnership with the Sfax University Hospital Habib Bourguiba's neurology department. Simultaneously, the Skhira district hospital has begun offering remote cardiology consultations, coordinated with the Sfax University Hospital Hédi Chaker's specialized department. The nephrology service at the same university hospital also provides remote consultations, allowing patients specialized follow-up without needing to travel to Sfax.

These services are organized on a weekly schedule, coordinated with the central team of the Digital Hospital under the Ministry of Health. The system is expected to gradually extend to other medical fields, with ongoing work to integrate new specialties and connect more health facilities in neighboring governorates. The Ministry of Health also aims to reduce pressure on hospitals, shorten waiting times, and lower patient travel costs.

Why it mattersTunisian citizens in Gafsa and Skhira governorates can now access specialized medical care remotely, reducing their need to travel for consultations in neurology, cardiology, and nephrology.
