Tunisia road accidents fall but fatalities rise

Road accidents in Tunisia decreased by nearly 10% by October 29, 2026, but the number of deaths increased by 13.19%.

Tunisian roads saw 4102 accidents by October 29, 2026, a 9.95% decrease from the same period in 2025. However, fatalities climbed to 1141, an increase of 13.19% compared to the previous year, according to the National Road Safety Observatory (ONSR). The number of injured also fell by 12.13% to 5293 people.

Speed was identified as a major factor in road deaths, contributing to 410 fatalities. This rise in deaths, despite fewer accidents, highlights a serious safety concern. The ONSR's provisional figures, recorded up to October 29, 2026, indicate a worrying trend as the year concludes.

Tunisia has set a national strategy to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 10% by 2027, 25% by 2030, and 50% by 2034. The plan includes deploying smart cameras and radars, improving infrastructure, and revising vehicle regulations.

Why it mattersTunisian road users are experiencing fewer accidents but facing a higher risk of death when accidents do occur.
