Canadian Biotech Limited-Tanzania is introducing rapid diagnostic technology, branded as CheckFor, to bring preliminary health screening closer to patients in Tanzania. The innovation focuses on simplicity, allowing individuals to obtain initial information about potential health issues, such as urinary tract infections, using a test strip and a color chart. This approach aims to reduce the tendency for patients to immediately purchase medication without a proper diagnosis.
The CheckFor UTI test specifically screens for indicators like leukocytes and nitrites in urine samples, providing results within minutes. While the technology is designed for ease of use without sophisticated laboratory equipment, Dr. Bartazary John, Director of Business Development at Canadian Biotech Tanzania, emphasizes that it serves as a screening tool and should not replace professional medical diagnosis. Residents at the 27th MedExpo Tanzania 2026 showed varied awareness of this new health innovation.
This innovation seeks to integrate a testing step into the patient's decision-making process, encouraging them to seek appropriate medical advice rather than self-medicating based on symptoms. Anna Beatus, a Dar es Salaam resident, noted that the technology could help individuals avoid unnecessary medicine purchases by guiding them toward further diagnosis if symptoms persist, thereby promoting a more informed approach to healthcare.
