The nation has made significant progress in combating financial crimes, with ongoing legislative amendments to further bolster its financial sector.
Tanzania has successfully strengthened its systems to combat money laundering and terrorism financing, according to the Minister of Finance, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar. Speaking at the 26th Ministerial Council meeting of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) in Kigali, Rwanda, Ambassador Omar highlighted the country's achievements in its mutual evaluation. He stated that while significant strides have been made, the government is actively addressing identified gaps to enhance the financial sector and overall economic development.
The country is working on 15 areas requiring further attention, including amendments to 12 laws applicable to both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Four laws have already been passed by Parliament for mainland Tanzania, and Zanzibar is set to table a bill to amend three laws. These advancements are the result of collaboration among various institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, banking regulators, and the Ministries of Justice and Home Affairs.
The ESAAMLG meeting convened government leaders and senior officials from across the Eastern and Southern Africa region to coordinate efforts against financial crimes. Tanzania's delegation included the Minister of Constitution and Legal Affairs, Dr. Juma Homera, and the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Ms. Sauda Msemo, who also chairs the National Committee of Experts on Anti-Money Laundering. The participation underscores the nation's commitment to regional cooperation in financial security.
