Museveni urges church to champion wealth creation

President Museveni's message at the 141st Bishop Hannington commemoration stressed combining spiritual guidance with practical efforts to improve livelihoods.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged the Church of Uganda and other religious institutions to promote socio-economic transformation and household wealth creation. The President's message was delivered by Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, at the 141st commemoration of Bishop James Hannington in Mayuge District.

The commemoration honoured the Anglican missionary martyred in Uganda in 1885. President Museveni thanked the Church of Uganda, the organising committee, and the people of Busoga for keeping Bishop Hannington’s legacy alive, noting his faith, courage, and sacrifice. Bishop Hannington first led missionaries to Uganda in 1882, facing numerous challenges.

He returned in 1885 with fellow missionaries like William Jones, but they were detained near Lake Victoria as their motives were misunderstood by the Kabaka. Bishop Hannington was killed on October 29, 1885, on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, through Busoga Chief Luba, at Kyando.

Why it mattersUgandan Christians are encouraged to integrate practical wealth creation with spiritual guidance.
