Cape Town dog impaled fleeing fireworks
Max suffered fatal injuries trying to escape Guy Fawkes celebrations in Delft on November 5.
A Cape Town dog named Max died on Thursday, November 5, after being impaled on a security gate while trying to escape Guy Fawkes fireworks. Max panicked when fireworks began shortly after dark at his family’s home in Delft. His family had secured the gate, but he attempted to squeeze through the bars, sustaining severe injuries.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA reported an 59% increase in calls on Guy Fawkes night, with 81 calls compared to 51 the previous year. Eight inspectors worked through the night, and at least five animals needed emergency veterinary care. SPCA communications manager Belinda Abraham stated Max should still be alive and urged residents to consider animals when celebrating with fireworks.
Veterinarians euthanised Max after a scan revealed extensive damage to his intestines and bladder. The SPCA is warning the public against donating to unverified animal rescue appeals, citing a recent social media appeal by Youth Pet Care founder Nazrudeen Adams that could not be verified. Residents can report distressed animals to the SPCA on 021 700 4158 or 021 700 4159.
